Insurance Medicals

Insurance Medicals

When you submit an application for life insurance, your insurance provider will commonly require a medical examination. This is to determine your overall health status as well as your risk levels for future disease.

Higher risk individuals often pay a higher monthly premium as they are more likely to claim from their insurance provider at least once in their lifetime. Individuals who are considered high risk include:

  • Smokers
  • Individuals who consume more than an average amount of alcohol
  • People who have existing chronic illness
  • People who have a strong family history of chronic disease
  • Individuals who test positive for illegal drugs
  • People who have jobs that place them at higher risk for injury, disease, disability, or death
  • Individuals who partake in dangerous recreational activities
  • People who are at higher risk of obtaining communicable diseases (those with compromised immune systems)

What Happens During an Insurance Medical?

You can expect the following during an insurance medical:

  • Identity check
  • Blood sample
  • Urine sample
  • Weight and height measurement
  • Blood pressure and pulse reading
  • Series of health questions to establish medical history

The blood and urine tests will determine if the following conditions exist:

  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease

They will also determine the presence of drugs and nicotine. In addition to these tests, you may be asked questions about your lifestyle to determine your risk levels.
