Nebulization

Nebulization at Parkhealth Medical Centres in Cape Town

A nebulizer is a machine that is used by people with asthma or other chronic respiratory conditions. The machine is designed to administer the medication directly into the lungs of the person using it.

The nebulizer turns liquid medication into a fine mist that can be easily inhaled through a mouthpiece or face mask. This method makes sure that the medication is being inhaled correctly and goes straight to the respiratory system where it is needed, providing almost instant relief.

Who Needs Nebulization?

People with chronic respiratory conditions will typically need nebulization as part of their treatment. These conditions include:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Bronchiectasis

However, doctors may find it necessary to nebulize patients who have acute lung infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Acute conditions are commonly treated in the doctor’s rooms, while patients with chronic conditions may need to purchase a nebulizer to use at home as this will be more cost-effective and allows for immediate access to treatment if necessary.

What Medication is Used in a Nebulizer?

All nebulizing medication is in liquid form, which is then poured into a specific component of the nebulizer.

Depending on the condition and its severity, the following are medications typically administered through a nebulizer:

  • Bronchodilators – These serve to open up the airways of the respiratory system to help with breathing. These are used when a patient has difficulty breathing
  • Sterile saline solution – Saline is used predominantly for thinning mucous in the airways. Mucous build-up in the respiratory system can make breathing difficult and can cause coughing. The saline solution makes coughing up mucous easier
  • Antibiotics – Not the most common type of nebulizing medication, but is used for people with serious bacterial lung infections

Based on your diagnosis, your doctor will determine the type of medication you need, its strength, how often you need to nebulize, and whether it will be best for you to purchase your own nebulizer to use at home.
