Male Circumcision

Male Circumcision at Parkhealth Medical Centres in Cape Town

Male circumcision is a procedure which involved removing the foreskin from a penis. The foreskin is a piece of skin that all males are born with.

Circumcision is done for a number of reasons which include cultural or religious norms and health benefits and based on these, the age at which boys or men are circumcised varies.

Circumcision for Infants and Young Boys

The procedure is done in the rooms and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. A local anesthetic is administered in the form of either a cream or injection. Our doctors will prescribe some pain killers if necessary and a follow-up visit may be required if there are complications.

Adult Male Circumcision

For adult men, the procedure is slightly more complicated and requires stitches. Local anesthetic can also be used, and the entire procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes. A dressing will be applied to the wound before sending the patient home with a prescription for pain medication if necessary. Standard procedure requires the patient to come for a follow-up visit 2 days after the procedure, then again in two weeks. The patient can continue as normal but must refrain from sexual activity for a period of 6 weeks.
