Male circumcision involves the surgical removal of the foreskin from a male’s penis. This procedure can be performed at any age, from birth until late adulthood. The foreskin is a piece of skin that covers the glans (head of the penis).
When a baby boy is born, the foreskin is attached to the penis and, over time, the foreskin will separate itself from the head of the penis so that it can be retracted.
In some cases, the foreskin does not separate, causing a condition known as phimosis. Phimosis usually requires circumcision as a corrective intervention.
Most commonly, male circumcision takes place one or two days after birth while the baby boy is still in hospital (assuming the child was born in hospital).
Otherwise, religious, and cultural norms will dictate when circumcision takes place. For example, in the Jewish and Islamic faiths, baby boys will be circumcised when they are 8 days old, while in Xhosa tradition when a young man is initiated into adulthood, circumcision is one of the rituals performed.
In infants/children, the procedure can be done under a local anesthetic. We have the option of using anesthetic injections or anesthetic cream, which is applied to the penis before and is then wrapped with sterile gauze. The procedure takes about 15 minutes to be completed. The infant/child goes home with a ring attached to the penis and it falls off between 10 - 14 days. Pain medication is prescribed only if they have pain. A follow-up visit it required if there are any problems. In adults, the procedure can also be done under a local anesthetic (anesthetic injection). The procedure is more involved, it requires stitches (suturing), takes about 45 minutes to be completed and the patient goes home with a dressing applied to the wound. The patient needs to see the doctor 2 days after the procedure and a follow-up visit is required 2 weeks after the procedure. Sexual activity can be resumed after 6 weeks.
