As a general practitioner in Cape Town, one of the most important roles I play in my patients' lives is providing preventative care. Two of the most crucial procedures we offer are pap smears and breast examinations. In this article, we explain what these procedures are, why they are important, and who needs them.
A Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. During the test, a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) and sent to a lab to be examined for abnormal cells. The procedure is done in the following way:
The procedure is usually painless, although some women may experience mild discomfort or cramping.
Cervical cancer is a slow-growing cancer that can be detected early through regular Pap smears. When abnormal cells are detected, treatment can be started before the cancer has a chance to develop. In addition, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which is sexually transmitted, is the leading cause of cervical cancer. Pap smear helps in detecting abnormal cells, which may be caused by HPV. This means that early detection can prevent cancer altogether.
Pap smears are recommended for all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, regardless of whether they are sexually active or not. Women who are sexually active or have a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) should have pap smears more frequently, usually every 3 years. Women who are over the age of 65 and have had three consecutive negative Pap tests or two consecutive negative HPV tests in the past 10 years can stop having the tests altogether.
A breast examination is a physical exam of the breasts to check for any lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities. It is done in the following way:
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, and early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. Regular breast examinations can help detect any changes or abnormalities in the breasts, such as lumps, nipple discharge, or changes in the skin, that may be signs of breast cancer. Breast examinations can also help identify other benign breast conditions, such as fibrocystic breast disease, that may require monitoring or treatment.
The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals with an average risk of breast cancer should undergo regular breast examinations starting at age 40. Women who have a higher risk of breast cancer, such as those with a family history of breast cancer, may need to start screening earlier or have more frequent screenings. Self-breast examinations can be done monthly at home, and women should report any changes or abnormalities to their healthcare provider as soon as possible.
